Identify areas of high pedestrian and automobile activity and work with the San Francisco Police Department to enforce existing laws, including but not limited to: double parking; yielding to pedestrians; speeding and bicycle laws.

Our office continues to work with the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) to develop innovative strategies to enforce existing laws targeting the most dangerous driving behaviors in the City. SFPD’s current enforcement strategy includes targeted enforcement of egregious driving behaviors that contribute to collisions. These include:

  • Driving at unsafe speed given roadway conditions; Cal Vehicle Code (CVC) 22350 = $238.00 to $490.00 fine

  • Running a red light; CVC 21453 = $490.00 fine

  • Failure to yield to pedestrian in a crosswalk; CVC 21950 = $238.00 fine

  • Failure to yield while making a left or U-turn; CVC 22107 = $238.00 fine

  • Failure to stop at a stop sign limit line; CVC 22450 = $238.00 fine

The Board of Supervisors passed a resolution our office sponsored in December 2014 that urged the California Judicial Council to reevaluate the fines and fees for these violations in addition to cell phone use while driving and unsafe passing of standing streetcars, trolley coaches, or bus safety zones.

SFPD also identified the five most dangerous intersections in the Taraval Police District – one of which (19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard) borders the Sunset District. We will continue to work with SFPD to identify and focus on additional problematic areas - including Irving St. between 19th and 27th Aves; Noriega St. between 30th and 33rd Aves.; and Vicente St. between 39th and 40th Aves. – to provide targeted enforcement.
