School Crossing Guard Program

District 4 is currently assigned 19 crossing guards across 10 schools. Of these guards, three new guards have been recently approved, including new guards at R.L. Stevenson Elementary School, Jefferson Elementary School and AP Gianinni Middle School. We appreciate the school principals and PTA members who have reached out to our office to advocate for these new positions. The hiring process is also currently underway to staff newly approved intersections and to replenish staffing.

RL Stevenson Walking School Bus

A “walking school bus” can be initiated by parents or caregivers. It is a group of children walking to school with one or more adults. The RL Stevenson (RLS) PTA recently organized a weekly walking school bus that meets Friday mornings. Our office was inspired by the efforts of the RLS PTA when we attended their inaugural event. We will be working with the other PTAs in our district to begin a dialogue on creating more walking school buses in the Sunset District.

Pedestrian Safety around Schools and Parks

Starting this fall, our office will begin the process of evaluating the safety around neighborhood parks, open spaces and schools. We will document existing STOP signs, updated curb ramps, sidewalk conditions, and crosswalk visibility. We will begin with schools that are in close proximity to streets that have had pedestrian-vehicle injuries or are high-injury corridors according to data from our Department of Public Health (DPH).  SFMTA has committed to collaborating with our office on specific concerns that arise from our assessment.
