Include pedestrian safety amenities in every street or intersection improvement project.

With the Better Streets Plan, the City already has a high standard for improving the pedestrian realm in all street and intersection improvement projects. These are some projects in the Sunset District that will incorporate pedestrian safety improvements, including:

  • Muni Forward 28-19th Avenue Rapid Project

  • Muni Forward L-Taraval Rapid Project

  • Muni Forward N-Judah Rapid Project

  • Irving Streetscape Improvement Project

  • Taraval Streetscape Improvement Project

These projects have been or are subject to community input, so we encourage residents to become involved in the public process for developing the plans.  To get involved with Muni Forward, visit http://tellmuni.com/.

However, over the last year, our office has been successful in advocating for additional pedestrian safety measures, particularly in cases where STOP sign requests have been denied. The most commonly approved measure is daylighting, which removes visual barriers within a minimum of 10 feet of a crosswalk or intersection. This increases visibility for pedestrians and motorists to make crossing the street easier and safer. Our office has successfully advocated for daylighting at the following intersections:

  • Taraval St. and 21st Ave.

  • Kirkham St. and 26th Ave.

  • Irving St. and 27th Ave.

  • Irving St. and La Playa St.

  • Wawona St. and 43rd Ave.
