Work with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and PG&E to improve street lighting conditions in key areas.

Street lighting technology has come far, and in areas where our Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) has converted old fixtures with LED lighting, lighting conditions have improved greatly. Proper lighting is better for drivers, pedestrians, and also can improve public safety. New technology also provides remote monitoring and control of lights, while consuming 50% less energy and being maintenance free for 15-20 years.

As part of the Taraval Streetscape Project, the lights on Taraval Street between 46th and 48th were upgraded to LED. The Irving Streetscape Project will also include LED upgrades on city-owned lights from 19th to 22nd Avenues on Irving Street. Pending funding, the PG&E-owned lights from 22nd to 27th Avenues will also be upgraded to LED. The Irving Streetscape project will begin construction in 2016.

Currently, the SFPUC is planning on converting city-owned poles to LED technology starting in 2016. When all of our city-owned poles are upgraded, SFPUC will begin negotiations with PG&E to request that they match their fixtures with SFPUC fixtures. Please note, however, that the majority of the streetlights in the Sunset District (those on wooden poles), are owned by PG&E.

Our office has reached out to SFPUC to improve lighting, especially when residents express a concern about the safety of a particular area. Recently, our office requested an assessment of the lighting conditions around the Sunset Reservoir. As a result, six lights around the reservoir will be upgraded to 150W bulbs to improve lighting levels. Our office will continue to work with SFPUC and PG&E to improve lighting conditions in the Sunset District.
