Promote transparency of relevant data, including crime statistics and trends, and enhance communication of potential safety concerns.

With advancements in technology, residents have access to enhanced tools that collect, report and disseminate data, such as San Francisco’s Open Data portal.  The Taraval Police Station also provides daily crime reports on its main website, www.taraval.org. We have witnessed neighbors sharing data in person at venues such as neighborhood watch groups and the Taraval Police Station Captain’s community meeting and online through portals such as Nextdoor.com. We will continue to share these resources with residents so they are aware of crime trends in their area.

There are also additional tools available for residents to more easily report crimes in the area. Residents are able to report online certain crimes such as harassing phone calls, lost property, theft, vandalism/graffiti, vehicle burglary, and vehicle tampering through the San Francisco Police Department’s (SFPD) Online Police Report System. Residents can also report issues such as graffiti through San Francisco’s 311 system in a variety of ways – online, through SF311’s app, and over the phone. We will continue to encourage residents to report crimes through these avenues, which will allow the City to track crime trends in our neighborhood.

We have also developed innovative ways for residents to report on crime in the district. An example of this process at work is our effort to prevent the use of illegal fireworks and explosives in the Sunset District. This has been an ongoing issue for many neighbors, and we have been working with the Taraval Police Station to address it. Unfortunately, the difficulty is in catching the perpetrators while in the act. After receiving a suggestion from a constituent to create a centralized tracking system, our office created a publicly-accessible document on our Board of Supervisors website that allows residents to input the locations and timing of fireworks and explosives in the Sunset District. In doing so, we can identify locations and times that are problematic, which will help SFPD deploy appropriate resources. We encourage neighbors to use this document and to continue to contact SFPD’s non-emergency line (415-553-0123).
