Continue working with Taraval Police Station on focused enforcement in high-complaint areas.

Our office has maintained a productive working relationship with the San Francisco Police Department’s (SFPD) Taraval Police Station and former Captain Curtis Lum. With the assignment of new Captain Denise Flaherty, we intend to continue this relationship with the Police Department in order to work collaboratively on enforcement in high-complaint areas and issues, such as traffic enforcement, property crimes, and human trafficking. While maintaining an open line of communication with neighborhood watch groups and residents, we inform SFPD of ongoing concerns and develop solutions and strategies together with the community.

An example of this process at work is our effort to prevent the use of illegal fireworks and explosives in the Sunset District. This has been an ongoing issue for many neighbors, and we have been working with the Taraval Police Station to address it. Unfortunately, the difficulty is in catching the perpetrators while in the act. After receiving a suggestion from a constituent to create a centralized tracking system, our office created a publicly-accessible document on our Board of Supervisors website that allows residents to input the locations and timing of fireworks and explosives in the Sunset District. In doing so, we can identify locations and times that are problematic, which will help SFPD deploy appropriate resources. We encourage neighbors to use this document and to continue to contact SFPD’s non-emergency line (415-553-0123).

We have also expanded our effort of focusing enforcement in high-complaint areas to include the Mayor’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office to address low-level crimes.  Although there is a low rate of violent crimes in the Sunset District, our neighborhood experiences a high amount of property crimes, such as break-ins, vandalism and theft. Including the Mayor’s Office and working more closely with the District Attorneys assigned to our neighborhood has helped us solve issues in a more comprehensive manner.
