Ensure that any growth in the Sunset District does not adversely impact the existing residential neighborhood character.

As was mentioned in the Blueprint, the Sunset District can accommodate an additional 1,000 housing units along our transit and commercial corridors without any changes to existing height limits or zoning. We further stated that any new development should enhance and respect the features that define our district.

With this goal in mind, our office is also committed to finding creative ways to solve our City’s affordable housing challenges. For example, our office is working with the Planning Department to inform residents about what is currently allowed under the Planning Code, such as Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). While some may argue that ADUs fundamentally alter the existing residential neighborhood character, we would like to highlight that ADUs come in different sizes, shapes, and forms, and they are allowed under the Planning Code pending department approvals and depending on the zoning in a particular neighborhood. The Planning Department recently produced an ADU handbook in July 2015, and residents can view the handbook here: http://www.sf-planning.org/ftp/files/plans-and-programs/planning-for-the-city/accessory-dwelling-units/2015_ADU_Handbook.pdf

In order to ensure that property owners maintain the general neighborhood characteristic while undergoing any construction changes, the Planning Department refers to the Residential Design Guidelines when residential alterations are being proposed. To view the Residential Design Guidelines, visit: http://www.sf-planning.org/Modules/ShowDocument.aspx?documentid=5356

Our office will continue to balance new ideas with the desire to preserve neighborhood character.
