Develop balance of day and night time businesses and activities to keep neighborhood vibrant.

Bringing a balance of day and night time businesses and activities accomplishes a number of goals: provide solutions to public safety issues with additional eyes on the street, develop cultural and community vitality, and improve the local economy. Our office has supported both current businesses and activities that provide diverse options, as well as created new opportunities for day and night time businesses and activities to thrive. We have continued the tradition of hosting free movies in McCoppin Park through the Movies in McCoppin program held every Friday night in October. In 2014, we were glad to have the People of Parkside Sunset (POPS) take over the main coordinating role of the event, and our office will continue to provide support.

We have also supported local businesses that have recently opened that provide a variety of safe, nighttime activities for youth and families. Honey Hive Gallery, a small establishment on Judah Street (near 46th Ave) that hosts musical acts and artist showings, is one such example. The Great Highway art gallery and working studio on Lawton Street (43rd Ave) is another great example.

We have also been diligently working with the community to identify open spaces that can host activities at a variety of times. After reaching out to the San Francisco Unified School District, we identified an opportunity to turn the Francis Scott Key Annex yard (1351 42nd Ave) into a temporary space to host activities. We held several community meetings alongside the Planning Department and their Pavement to Parks program to discuss the potential opportunities, and jointly completed a final design at the end of July 2015. The project should be completed by Fall 2015.

We have also been active supporters of the Sunset Mercantile, a festive open air pop-up featuring artists, crafters, food artisans, budding entrepreneurs, businesses and non-profits spearheaded by residents. We will be partnering with the Sunset Mercantile for our Sunset Community Festival on Saturday, September 19. The Sunset Community Festival has been a family tradition on the west side of town for 20 years, and our office is excited to carry on the tradition.

We look forward to continuing to support and attract businesses and events that provide a diverse array of services and activities for our residents. During the Fiscal Year 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 budget process, we successfully advocated for funding for the Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) to conduct District 4 business attraction efforts. We look forward to working with OEWD in effectively utilizing this funding.
