Create policy to discourage property owners from leaving commercial spaces vacant for prolonged periods.

In July 2014, the Board of Supervisors passed legislation sponsored by our office to create a Vacant Commercial Storefront registry to better assist property owners in locating suitable tenants. The registry will also help those who are looking to open a small business and are searching for appropriate spaces to locate. The legislation requires that property owners register their vacant storefront within 30 days of the vacancy occurring. Furthermore, property owners are required to provide detailed information about the vacant space, including total square footage and the previous business use. The data collected feeds into the City’s vacancy database, StorefrontSF. Our office will continue to monitor the list of vacant commercial storefronts in the Sunset District and provide information to interested small business owners.
