In partnership with the San Francisco Unified School District, streamline school enrollment applications to assist applicants with the process.

We have heard from many families in the Sunset District of the complicated process of applying for public schools and navigating the waiting list process. Our office is dedicated to supporting efforts to streamline the application process for public school enrollment, particularly for immigrant and vulnerable families. We have monitored the San Francisco Unified School District’s progress in implementing a pilot electronic application and continue to offer our support. Our office has also committed to supplementing city programming with Sunset District-based workshops on student enrollment and applications in partnership with organizations such as Parents for Public Schools. And we will continue to outreach to relevant stakeholders, such as Parent Teacher Student Associations, the Board of Education, and school administrators, to address ways to improve the application process for parents.

In June 2015, the Board of Education voted down a measure to give students who live in a school’s attendance area priority over families living in census tracts where students post the lowest test scores under a policy called Census Tract Integration Preference (CTIP). We will continue to monitor policy discussions at the Board of Education and educate our residents about potential changes.
