Support existing neighborhood-building events and organize additional events for community members to gather and connect

Discover Your District (DYD)

Our office started the Discover Your District (DYD) series as a first-of-its-kind, neighborhood program that aims to provide community members with the opportunity to connect with each other and enjoy neighborhood activities. After the first round of DYD events, residents had the opportunity to interact with a range of District 4 small businesses and organizations. Neighbors created holiday gift tags with 3 Fish Studios, learned the art of roasting coffee with Henry’s House of Coffee, and learned to make dumplings with the owner of Kingdom of Dumpling, among other activities. Our office received great feedback from participants that they were able to learn new skills and visit small businesses they had never visited before. In light of the great feedback and popularity of this program, our office looks forward to continuing this program.

Movies in McCoppin

Our office co-hosted Movies in McCoppin with People of Parkside Sunset (POPS) in October 2014, and it turned out to be another successful series for residents and merchants. After three years of partnering with our office on this event, POPS will be taking a lead role in organizing Movies in McCoppin in 2015. We will continue to assist POPS in hosting this family-friendly event so that families can continue to enjoy the movie nights in coming years.

District 4 Holiday Craft Fair

Seeing a lack of art-centered community activities, our office started an annual Sunset District Holiday Craft Fair. We co-hosted the second annual Sunset District Holiday Craft Fair in December 2014 with District 4 resident Beverly Buchanan. The event, which has been held at Vintage Golden Gate, also serves seniors residing at the facility, and provides them an opportunity to interact with community members and get their holiday shopping completed. We have enjoyed working with our local artists and artisans on this annual event.

Front Yard Ambassador Program

In an effort to address neighborhood beautification and environmental issues while building neighbor relations, our office started the Front Yard Ambassador Program in February 2014. Through this program, District 4 residents are able to install front yard landscaping with drought-tolerant plants, helping to divert storm water from our City’s combined sewer system.  After four rounds of this program, we have helped remove over 4,500 square feet of concrete from the Sunset District, diverting over 54,000 gallons of storm water from the City’s sewer system each year. To qualify for the program, residents must work with at least four other neighbors on the block. We have enjoyed planting alongside residents and seeing neighbors build partnerships with each other in this effort. Our office hopes to continue this program as long as funding is available.

Festivals in the Sunset

Community festivals provide great opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy the Sunset District. This year, our office will be organizing the Autumn Moon Festival on September 12 on Irving Street (between 22nd – 25th Ave) and the Sunset Community Festival on September 19 at West Sunset Playground (39th and Ortega). These festivals were started by community members years ago, and our office has heard from many residents their desire to continue these two events.
